IDF Prepares Troop Redeployments and Curfews Amid West Bank Tensions Ahead of Holidays

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is considering significant troop redeployments and imposing curfews on soldiers as it braces for potential escalation in the West Bank during the upcoming holiday season and election period. Major General Itzik Cohen, head of the Operations Directorate since July 2025, faces a critical decision on whether to shift regular and reserve forces from Lebanon, Syria, and the Gaza Strip to the Central Command area. This move aims to address rising security concerns amid multiple volatile fronts.

In the Gaza Strip, Hamas continues to challenge IDF forces along the "yellow line," including on land and at sea, where naval units are prepared for various scenarios. Southern Command Chief Major General Yaniv Asor, alongside the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence, is reinstating a clear policy of targeted assassinations, having eliminated about 19 terrorists in the past two weeks, including a Hamas military platoon commander.

The Central Command front in the West Bank has drawn increased attention due to the risk that any unusual incident, ranging from nationalist crime, Jewish or Palestinian terrorism, to daily friction, could quickly escalate into violence. The upcoming holidays, characterized by mass gatherings and political events amid the election campaign, heighten these concerns. The IDF is also factoring in the potential impact of the elections on both Israeli society and hostile Palestinian areas.

Recent attacks in the Jordan Valley, including two stabbing incidents within hours, underscore the volatile security environment. The IDF is evaluating whether to impose a curfew on soldiers to maintain readiness. Meanwhile, in southern Lebanon, the IDF continues to strengthen security along the "yellow line," conducting extensive area scans to detect terrorists, infrastructure, and weapons, while facing ongoing challenges from Hezbollah, including explosive drone threats. Lebanese forces have been criticized for failing to dismantle Hezbollah’s terror infrastructure.

In Syria, the IDF maintains significant positions forming a security belt for the Golan Heights settlements, conducting operations against militants and arms traffickers. Despite diplomatic pressures from Syria, the US, and Turkey, the IDF emphasizes the strategic necessity of maintaining forces from Mount Hermon to the Jordan border triangle to secure Israel’s northern frontiers.
