Spanish Court Sentences Rafa Mir to 8.5 Years for Sexual Assault
A Spanish court has sentenced Elche striker Rafa Mir to 8.5 years in prison over a sexual assault case involving a 21-year-old woman. The ruling, reported on Monday, is still open to appeal.
The prosecution had sought a far heavier penalty in March, asking for 10.5 years behind bars after Mir was accused of sexually assaulting the woman in September 2024. The court also barred him from coming within 500 meters of the victim for 10 years.
In addition to the prison term, Mir was ordered to pay 14,000 euros for physical damages and 50,000 euros for emotional distress. The incident took place on September 1, 2024, when Mir was still a Valencia player before his loan move to Elche.
Mir was arrested, gave testimony in October, and was later charged with sexual assault. He was released on bail of 12,500 euros.
