Rafa Mir Sentenced to 8.5 Years for Sexual Assault
A Spanish court has sentenced Elche striker Rafa Mir to 8.5 years in prison over the alleged sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman in September 2024. The verdict came on Monday, after prosecutors in March had sought a 10.5-year sentence in the case.
The court also barred Mir from coming within 500 meters of the victim for 10 years. In addition, he was ordered to pay her 14,000 euros for physical damages and 50,000 euros for emotional distress. Mir can still appeal the ruling.
The incident took place on September 1, 2024, when Mir was still a Valencia player on loan to Elche. He was arrested, gave testimony in October, and was later charged with sexual assault.
Mir was released on bail of 12,500 euros. The case continues to reverberate through Spanish football as the legal process moves into the appeals stage.
