Suzuki Launches Electric Vitara With Limited Range and Outdated Features
Suzuki, known for transforming small cars into unique vehicles, has introduced the electric version of its Vitara model, called the e-Vitara, produced in India. Unlike the original Vitara, a rugged and reliable compact SUV, the e-Vitara lacks all-wheel drive and true off-road capability, making it unsuitable as a genuine off-road vehicle. It features a front-wheel-drive electric motor with 174 horsepower and a 61 kWh battery, officially rated for over 400 km range, though real-world tests show much shorter distances, with significant battery depletion after driving less than 170 km.
The e-Vitara’s interior is designed to resemble a tough SUV but falls short in comfort and quality. The driver’s seat is electric but uncomfortable, the passenger seat is manual and hard, and rear passengers face limited headroom and no dedicated air vents. The cargo space is modest, with a high floor and limited expansion despite a sliding rear bench. The infotainment system is functional but slow and occasionally intrusive with camera displays.
On the road, the e-Vitara performs adequately on highways with decent suspension but suffers from road noise intrusion. It supports fast charging, replenishing over half the battery in 30 minutes, but its limited range and cramped rear seating raise questions about its market appeal. Priced at 165,000 shekels, it is more expensive than comparable Chinese electric SUVs that offer better range, space, and features for 140,000 to 160,000 shekels.
The e-Vitara seems targeted at buyers who prefer a Japanese brand or require a non-Chinese electric vehicle, such as those restricted from entering certain bases with Chinese cars. However, for most consumers, better electric options exist in the current market, making the e-Vitara a niche choice with questionable value given its price and limitations.
