Police Release Suspects in Eldar Dayan Case Due to Lack of Evidence for Murder
Two suspects in the death of Eldar Dayan will be released on Monday after police failed to establish sufficient evidence proving murder, largely due to the condition in which Dayan's body was found. Additionally, five other suspects involved in the fight preceding Dayan's death will also be released, though legal proceedings against them will continue. A police source told Kan News, "There is no murder based on the evidence we have gathered." The details were shared with Dayan's family.
About a week and a half ago, investigative officials indicated that forensic findings could not determine the cause of Dayan's death. Authorities suspect Dayan may have been injured during an altercation and died later while fleeing. Bloodstains found in his vehicle did not match Dayan or the suspects. Police stated, "There is no way to establish a case of murder, stabbing, or shooting."
Last Thursday, the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court extended the detention of the five suspects involved in the fight. Police claimed the suspects attacked Dayan, causing severe injuries that led to his death hours later. Dayan's body was discovered in an open area near Petah Tikva on August 6, following three weeks of extensive searches.
On July 18, Dayan and his friends Omri Peretz and Maxim Braverman traveled from Dimona to central Israel. At a park in Hod Hasharon, a fight broke out between Dayan and his two friends. Peretz and Braverman left in Braverman's mother's car, leaving Dayan behind, but later returned to the spot. All three were under the influence of drugs during the incident. Dayan introduced his friends to a group of five men at the park, which escalated into a fight between the groups.
At one point, Peretz attempted to run over one of the men with the car, lightly injuring him. The car's windshield was damaged when the injured man struck it after the attempted run-over. Dayan's participation in the fight was relatively limited. One of the five men testified that Peretz and Braverman threatened to kill him. The investigation has faced challenges, including conflicting testimonies and the inability to determine the exact cause of death.
