Israeli Court Extends Detention of Suspects in Eldar Dayan Murder Amid Investigation Gaps

The investigation into the murder of Eldar Dayan continues as the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court extended the detention of suspects Maxim Barberman and Omri Peretz by seven days until August 19. This marks the fifth extension since their arrest in late July. Authorities suspect that Dayan's friends caused his death by striking him with a helmet. During the court hearing, the police outlined 18 investigative actions still pending and expressed concern that releasing the suspects could jeopardize the investigation. The forensic results from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, crucial to the case, are still awaited and may take up to two more weeks.

A key issue raised is the police's failure to locate Dayan's body during at least four prior searches in the area where it was eventually found. The police declined to disclose the exact location or the information leading to the late discovery. It was also revealed that suspect Barberman indicated a location where Dayan supposedly separated from the group, which did not match the actual site where the body was recovered. The defense highlighted weaknesses in the evidence, noting the absence of DNA on a shovel found near the scene and questioned the forensic links to the suspects.

Despite security camera footage showing the suspects with Dayan near the time of his disappearance, the suspects have given conflicting accounts that do not align with existing evidence. Judge Itamar Sivan ruled that although direct forensic evidence is lacking, there is reasonable suspicion connecting the suspects to the crimes. He emphasized the danger and risk of evidence tampering but limited the detention extension to one week rather than the full period requested by the police. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to gather evidence and examine potential police lapses in the search operation.
