Hapoel Jerusalem appoints Sasha Obradovic as head coach in bid for European elite
Hapoel Jerusalem announced on Sunday that Serbian coach Sasha Obradovic has been appointed head coach through the end of the 2028/29 season. He replaces Yotam Alon, and the move is part of owner Matan Adelson’s broader rebuilding plan for the club. Obradovic is regarded as one of Europe’s most respected coaches, with a strong career both as a player and on the bench.
The appointment comes just days after a disappointing finish to the season, in which Jerusalem won no major trophy. Last week, the team was swept out of the Israeli league semifinals by Hapoel Tel Aviv, and earlier it exited the EuroCup in the quarterfinals, despite having been the best team in the regular stage. The club sees the new coach as a statement of intent, with the goal of reaching the EuroLeague via the EuroCup as soon as next season.
Adelson said, “The appointment of a top EuroLeague coach like Sasha reflects our determination to achieve the ambitions we have set for ourselves. It is time to write a new chapter in the club’s history. I will do everything I can to make sure Hapoel grows and competes at the highest levels of European basketball as soon as possible.” Obradovic said he chose Hapoel because of “the vision and ambitions,” adding, “The goal is clear, to build a fighting team that will compete for every title.”
The coaching change is expected to be accompanied by a major budget increase and significant roster changes. The club plans to keep its Israeli core of Yovel Zoosman, Roy Huber, Nimrod Levi and Eitan Burg. Jared Harper, who is already under contract for next season, is expected to receive a new and improved deal. Hapoel is also negotiating with Justin Smith in hopes of keeping him in Jerusalem for another season.
