Defense Minister Says Israel Opposes IDF Withdrawal from Lebanon, Citing Netanyahu-Trump Talks
Defense Minister Israel Katz said that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are pursuing a clear policy under which the IDF will remain in security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza indefinitely. He said the goal is to defend the border and nearby Israeli communities from jihadist elements.
Katz said those areas would be kept free of local residents, and called that the main lesson of the October 7 attacks. He added, “We oppose an IDF withdrawal from Lebanon, despite all the existing pressures and those that will still come.”
According to Katz, Netanyahu conveyed this position to U.S. President Donald Trump and to other senior American officials. Katz said he also made the same point the previous day to U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
