Military Reporter Warns of Unanswered Questions Over Possible US-Iran Deal and Lebanon Front
As talks over a looming agreement between the United States and Iran continue to draw attention in Israel's political and security circles, military correspondent Doron Kadosh said Monday that one of the biggest unresolved issues is the northern front and Israel's freedom of action against Hezbollah.
In a post, Kadosh said no side has yet published the full terms of the deal, while one of its most important elements appears to be arrangements along the northern border. Based on leaks from Iran, he said, the understandings include a permanent ceasefire in Lebanon, a development he said raises difficult questions about Israel's war aims and its effort to separate the different battlefronts.
Kadosh said it remains unclear whether the understandings would require the IDF to withdraw from areas it currently holds in Lebanon, either fully or partially. He also said it is unknown whether Israel would still be able to act against immediate threats across the border, stop Hezbollah from rebuilding its forces, or prevent the group's operatives from moving toward the border area and south of the Litani River.
He stressed that despite the public interest and the possible implications for northern residents' security, the political leadership has not yet given Israelis any clear explanation of the deal or its practical meaning. Kadosh said the uncertainty is fueling fears, especially among communities in northern Israel that have been directly affected by the fighting in recent years. He ended by asking, "Have we once again been left to our fate מול Hezbollah, which may now receive American permission to grow stronger beyond our border?"
