Grandfather Charged After Fatal Boating Accident Kills Two Grandchildren in New Jersey
A tragic boating accident in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, near the Orthodox Jewish community of Lakewood, resulted in the deaths of two young siblings, aged 7 and 9. The incident occurred on the night of July 19 at 9:09 p.m. when a 30-foot motorboat, carrying four passengers including the 64-year-old grandfather, his wife, and their two grandchildren, collided forcefully with a wooden maritime navigation marker. The impact threw the children into the water, and despite immediate rescue efforts by their grandparents and rapid hospital transport, both children were pronounced dead.
Investigations by New Jersey State Police, the Point Pleasant Marine Unit, and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office revealed that the grandfather was operating the boat under the influence of alcohol, impairing his ability to safely navigate. The navigation marker’s warning lights were functioning correctly at the time of the crash. The grandfather voluntarily surrendered to police last Friday and was charged with two counts of second-degree negligent homicide by vessel, boating under the influence, and reckless operation.
The local community around Lakewood and nearby Lacey Township, where the family resided, was deeply shocked by the tragedy. Family members described the siblings as inseparable best friends. Authorities noted this accident as the most severe in a series of fatal boating incidents in Barnegat Bay this summer. The grandfather remains in custody pending a court hearing and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
