Brother and Sister Drown in Lake Michigan During Family Vacation in South Bend

A tragic accident struck the Jewish community in South Bend, Michigan, with the deaths of siblings Hannah Malka Zweig, 21, and Joseph Yehuda Zweig, 18, who drowned in Lake Michigan. The siblings were on a family vacation on Monday when they got into trouble while boating on the lake. Emergency teams were called to the scene and worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to rescue them. Both were transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital but did not survive. Hannah Malka and Joseph Yehuda were children of Rabbi Yehoshua and Hadassah Zweig from South Bend and grandchildren of Rabbi Yochanan Zweig, head of the yeshiva and founder of the Talmudic University of Florida (Kollel Beit Moshe Chaim) in Miami Beach. Lake Michigan, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, attracts thousands of visitors annually but is known for rapidly changing conditions, including strong currents and high waves, posing serious risks even to experienced swimmers.
