Israel Silent After Trump Says Deal Reached With Iran, Tehran Claims Victory
President Donald Trump announced overnight, between Sunday and Monday, that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement, though it has not yet been formally signed. In Israel, no official response had been issued as of publication, even though Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before the announcement.
Tehran quickly confirmed the deal and framed it as a win over Washington. Iranian officials said the United States had been forced to accept the agreement, and mocked Trump by saying Iranians, under the leadership of the supreme leader, had shown America there was no choice but to “accept defeat.”
The two sides also gave conflicting accounts about the Strait of Hormuz. A deputy Iranian foreign minister said the American blockade there would end overnight and that the end of the war would also include stopping military activity in other arenas, including Lebanon. Trump later said the blockade would only be lifted after the signing on Friday in Switzerland. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the final text had been completed, the maritime blockade on Iran would be removed fully and immediately, and final talks would begin only after the other side carried out its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.
Pakistan was the first mediator to welcome the announcement, thanking the United States and Iran for seeking a diplomatic solution and praising Qatar for its mediation effort. Qatar then said it welcomed the memorandum of understanding and expected all sides to take part in the coming talks in a positive and constructive spirit. Trump also posted a series of messages saying it was a “great deal” and that “oil will flow again for the region and the world.”
