Israel Stays Silent as Trump Announces Deal With Iran, While Tehran Mocks Washington
US President Donald Trump said overnight, between Sunday and Monday, that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement, though it had not yet been formally signed. Israel has not issued any official response so far, even though Trump spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before making the announcement.
Iran quickly embraced the announcement as a win. Officials in Tehran said they had forced the United States to accept the deal and mocked Trump, saying that Iranians, under the guidance of the supreme leader, had shown Washington there was no alternative but to accept defeat. Trump's message came alongside a series of posts saying it was a “great deal” and that “oil will flow again for the region and the world.”
There were also conflicting accounts over the status of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s deputy foreign minister said the US blockade there would end already overnight, and that the end of the war would also include ending military activity in other arenas, including Lebanon. Trump later clarified that the lifting of the blockade would happen only after the signing on Friday in Switzerland.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the final text of the agreement had been completed and that the naval blockade on Iran would be lifted “fully and immediately.” It added that talks on the final agreement would begin only after the other side carried out its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.
The first public praise came from Pakistan, whose prime minister thanked the United States and Iran for their commitment to a diplomatic solution and also thanked Qatar for its mediation efforts. Qatar then said its prime minister welcomed the memorandum of understanding between the two countries and expected all sides to take part in the coming talks in a positive and constructive spirit.
