Jerusalem Worries Trump May Press Israel to Pull Back in Lebanon

Israeli officials are examining the possibility that President Donald Trump could try to limit Israel’s military freedom of action in Lebanon as part of broader understandings being formed between Washington and Tehran. The concern in Jerusalem has grown over recent weeks as talks on the scope of Israel’s operations in Lebanon have become more complex.

According to a report in Maariv, citing two Israeli sources, Trump raised the issue of Israel’s presence in Lebanon and on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon in recent conversations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Among the options discussed was a withdrawal from all five positions held by the IDF in southern Lebanon, along with an exit from the Syrian Hermon area.

Those steps were discussed within a wider framework that also includes a full ceasefire and an end to offensive military activity in the area. Security officials in Israel say any restriction on the IDF’s maneuvering space would carry major security and political consequences.

Officials in Jerusalem are now assessing how such moves could affect the security threat in the north, as well as Israel’s strategic and political standing. The discussion also reflects a broader effort to balance security needs with diplomatic progress in the talks with Iran.
