Israeli Swimmer Tomer Shuster Sets National Record in 100m Backstroke at European Championships

Israeli swimmer Tomer Shuster continued his impressive performance at the European Championships in Paris by setting a new Israeli record in the 100-meter backstroke. On August 15, Shuster advanced to the semifinals from sixth place with a time of 53.39 seconds, breaking the previous national record held jointly by Yaakov Tomarkin and Adam Marahneh by 0.21 seconds. This marks Shuster's second Israeli record at the current championships, having also broken the 50-meter backstroke record two days earlier. The semifinals for the 100-meter backstroke are scheduled for the evening at 21:10.

Other Israeli swimmers also made notable progress. Anastasia Gorbanko from Maccabi Kiryat Bialik qualified for the semifinals in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 30.91 seconds, placing 14th. She is set for a busy evening with both the 50-meter breaststroke semifinals and the 200-meter individual medley final, for which she qualified the day before. In the men's 200-meter individual medley, Eitan Ben Shitrit (Jerusalem Rabati) and Alexey Glivinsky (Hapoel Jerusalem) advanced to the semifinals, finishing eighth and tenth respectively with personal bests.

In the men's 50-meter freestyle, Miron Haruti (Maccabi Haifa) qualified for the semifinals in 14th place with a time of 21.96 seconds, while Martin Kartavi (Maccabi Haifa) was the first reserve after finishing 18th. Tom Sela (Maccabi Haifa) placed 69th. Leah Polonsky (Maccabi Haifa) closed the morning session for Israel, finishing 20th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:15.61.

Additionally, Inbar Danziger (Hapoel Jerusalem) set a personal best of 54.13 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke, placing 20th and becoming the first reserve for the semifinals. Okan Goldin (Maccabi Nahariya) and Michael Leiterovsky (Jerusalem Rabati) also competed but did not advance.

The Israeli team’s strong showing at the European Championships highlights their rising competitiveness on the continental stage, with several swimmers advancing to evening semifinals and finals.
