Spanish Broadcasters Ignore Israeli Runner in Live European Athletics Coverage

During the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, UK, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE sparked controversy by ignoring Israeli hurdler Omri Shif during a live broadcast. As the announcers introduced all athletes by name and country before the 400-meter hurdles race, they conspicuously omitted mentioning Shif and Israel when the camera focused on his lane. Instead, they cited a technical error affecting the previous runner. Immediately afterward, the Hungarian athlete Árpád Banóci was introduced promptly by name and nationality.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, especially on pro-Palestinian pages such as "Eye on Palestine," which framed the omission as a form of social protest or a silent boycott against Israeli athletes in international sports. Later in the race, Omri Shif was disqualified.

The championships, held over a week starting Monday at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, feature an 18-member Israeli delegation including both seasoned athletes with notable European and international achievements and younger competitors making their debut. The RTVE broadcast's handling of Shif's introduction has raised accusations of antisemitism amid the ongoing tensions surrounding Israeli representation in global sports events.
