Spanish Broadcasters Ignore Israeli Athlete in Live European Athletics Coverage

During the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, UK, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE sparked controversy by ignoring Israeli hurdler Omri Shif during a live broadcast. While the commentators introduced all other athletes by name and country, they conspicuously omitted any mention of Shif when the camera focused on his lane. Instead, they spoke about a technical error affecting the previous runner. Immediately after, the Hungarian athlete Árpád Banóci was introduced by name and nationality without hesitation.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, especially on pro-Palestinian pages like "Eye on Palestine," which framed the omission as a silent boycott or social protest against Israeli athletes in international sports. Omri Shif was later disqualified from the 400-meter hurdles event. The championships, held at Alexander Stadium, began on Monday and run for a week, featuring an Israeli delegation of 18 athletes, including both seasoned competitors with significant European and international achievements and younger athletes making their debut.

This episode has raised concerns about antisemitism in sports broadcasting and the treatment of Israeli athletes on the global stage.
