Tel Aviv's Al Shachaf Restaurant Revives Classic Fish Diner Style with Mixed Results

Al Shachaf restaurant opened a year ago at the eastern entrance to Tel Aviv's bustling Park HaMesila, aiming to revive the charm of traditional Israeli fish diners popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, such as Barbunia and Shchofek. These classic eateries were known for affordable fish dishes served with complimentary salad sets and bread refills, attracting long queues of customers. However, Al Shachaf's approach diverges from this model, with salads priced separately and no free bread refills, reflecting a shift in dining culture and pricing.

The restaurant offers both outdoor seating and an indoor room reminiscent of Barbunia's legendary Ben Yehuda Street bar, featuring wooden decor, staff photos, and Israeli music. Despite these nostalgic touches, the atmosphere feels artificial and lacks the authentic joy of the original venues. The menu includes modern options like ceviche and sashimi alongside fried fish dishes.

During a recent visit, the reviewer ordered standard salads (eggplant, tzatziki, and ikra) and several fish dishes including fried calamari, a sea bream skewer, and thin fish fillets called marlans. The calamari was praised for its perfect texture and accompanying aioli sauces, while the sea bream skewer was well-charred yet juicy. The marlans were also well-prepared and flavorful. All dishes were served promptly and cooked properly.

A notable disappointment came with the bread service: when requesting an extra slice to finish the salads, the staff charged 15 shekels per slice, a stark contrast to the free bread refills customary in classic fish diners. This small but telling detail was seen as emblematic of the current dining scene's focus on profit over hospitality. Despite this, the reviewer found the restaurant charming and appreciated the effort to bring back a bygone dining style, even if it felt somewhat inauthentic.

Prices at Al Shachaf are relatively high, with salads ranging from 18 to 28 shekels, fish skewers and fried dishes between 78 and 98 shekels, and a 200 ml bottle of ouzo costing 118 shekels. The restaurant is located at 22 Herzl Street, Tel Aviv.
