New Tel Aviv Seaside Restaurant 'Melach Yam' Revives Dream of Authentic Beach Dining
For many Israelis, the ideal culinary and tourism experience is to sit by the sea, enjoy a drink, and eat fried fish. However, genuine seaside dining options have been scarce in Israel, with existing venues either too upscale or lacking true proximity to the water. Notable exceptions included Helena in Caesarea and Abu Christo in Acre, but these fell short of the full beachside dream. Manta Ray in Tel Aviv was the only restaurant that came close until recently, when it narrowly avoided closure and changed ownership.
Now, a new large-scale restaurant called Melach Yam has opened on Tel Aviv's Gordon Beach, replacing a former Greco branch. Although separated from the sand by a concrete promenade, the sea is very close. The menu is crafted by young chefs Tal Sohami and Elad Dagan, known from the now-closed Mansura restaurant and brief stints at George and John. The owner is Nevo Doctori, who also owns the iconic Banana Beach in Tel Aviv.
Melach Yam offers a distinctly Israeli menu, featuring classics like hummus and falafel alongside fresh fish dishes. The meal begins with a "table opening" of six salads and two warm pitas for 58 shekels. Starters include sea carpaccio for 78 shekels, followed by lamb kebabs at 96 shekels and large Kinneret sardines (called "Lebanon of the Kinneret") for 104 shekels. The lamb kebabs were praised for their juiciness and seasoning, served with pickled onions, tahini, chimichurri, and roasted hot green peppers. The sardines were notably large, crispy, and flavorful. The meal ended with a moist pistachio cake and a large scoop of vanilla ice cream for 48 shekels, accompanied by ouzo and espresso.
The atmosphere features classic Israeli music rather than Mediterranean or Greek tunes, reinforcing the local vibe. Despite some minor critiques of the carpaccio's thin slicing and the concrete barrier between the restaurant and the beach, the overall experience was highly enjoyable and suggests a promising future for authentic seaside dining in Israel.
Melach Yam is located at 17 Shlomo La'het Promenade, Tel Aviv.
