Israeli Police Arrest Suspect in Shfar’am Playground Hit-and-Run Injuring Two Children

Israeli police recently arrested an 18-year-old resident of Bir al-Maksur on suspicion of involvement in a serious hit-and-run accident in Shfar’am. The suspect, who never obtained a driving license, drove a Yamaha TMAX scooter recklessly into a playground where two 8-year-old children were playing, injuring them moderately before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred several months ago in the evening, prompting an immediate police investigation involving witness testimonies, security camera footage, and intelligence gathering.

Following the accident, the suspect hid the scooter at a relative’s property far from his home to conceal evidence. About three weeks ago, police raided the suspect’s home, arresting him and seizing ammunition and suspected drugs, which worsened his legal situation. Additionally, a 22-year-old relative was detained for assisting in hiding the scooter; parts of the scooter believed to be from the accident were found dismantled at his residence.

Both suspects are under investigation by the Galilee Traffic Unit, with their detention extended until August 16, 2026, by the Haifa Magistrate’s Court. Police emphasized their commitment to cracking down on reckless drivers and road violence, particularly focusing on two-wheeled vehicles and micromobility devices, to ensure full legal accountability for offenders.
