Neymar Becomes Brazil's Sideline Leader as Return Looms

Brazil opened the 2026 World Cup with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Morocco, but the bigger story was Neymar’s role off the field. Although the No. 10 was not in the match squad because of a right calf muscle injury, he still found a way to influence the team from the bench.

According to Globo, Neymar spent the entire match on the substitutes’ bench and effectively acted as an assistant coach, trying to direct and advise his teammates. He used his standing as a leader to deliver motivational talks and lengthy explanations, especially during water breaks in the first half.

His involvement continued after the final whistle, when Brazil were left frustrated by their poor opening display. Neymar did not go through the official mixed zone, since he was not registered for the game, but he took charge in the locker room and was one of the loudest voices trying to calm the players after the disappointing debut.

Brazil can now look ahead to his comeback. The plan is for Neymar to return to training as soon as Monday, to rejoin the full squad. His official return to match action is scheduled for the next round, when Brazil face Haiti.
