US Official Says Permanent Israeli Military Presence in South Lebanon Contradicts Agreements

A senior US State Department official responded on Thursday night to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant's recent statements during his visit to southern Lebanon. Gallant declared that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would not withdraw from the "security zone" in southern Lebanon and that he had instructed the military to prepare for a long-term presence there. The US official emphasized that Washington views a permanent Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon as inconsistent with the commitments made under existing agreements. "The United States expects all parties to act in accordance with the agreed framework," the official said, adding that Israel has clearly stated it has no territorial ambitions in Lebanon. The official stressed that a permanent Israeli presence contradicts both the agreements and the long-term peace and security of both countries. The US reiterated its full support for Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty. However, Washington clarified that Israel's withdrawal should proceed only in line with verified progress in disarming Hezbollah and dismantling its infrastructure. The official noted that the framework explicitly conditions a gradual Israeli withdrawal on confirmed Hezbollah disarmament. Lebanon's army has already begun implementing initial pilot zones, and the US will continue supporting the full process. Gallant's comments came during his tour of IDF forces in Lebanon on August 12, 2026, where he stated unequivocally that Israel would not retreat from the areas it currently holds. "As the Prime Minister and I have made clear, we are not withdrawing from this security zone," Gallant said. He added that the IDF is present to protect northern Israeli communities and its forces, to clear the area, and to ensure the security of northern residents. Gallant instructed the IDF to take all necessary steps to prepare for a prolonged deployment, framing the presence as a lesson learned from the October 7 attacks. "The lesson of October 7 is that we protect our residents by having the IDF here, in these places, defending them from raids, rocket fire, and other threats. This is our policy and approach," he said.
