US Criticizes Israeli Defense Minister Katz Over Troop Presence in South Lebanon

The US State Department sharply criticized Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz for his recent declaration of a continued Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon. A senior US official emphasized that a permanent Israeli military presence contradicts commitments made under the framework agreement involving the US, Israel, and Lebanon. The official stated, "The United States expects all parties to adhere to the framework agreement, under which Israel has clearly stated it has no territorial ambitions in Lebanon." He added that a permanent Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon is inconsistent with the agreement's terms and undermines long-term peace and security for both countries.

Katz made his remarks during a tour of southern Lebanon, declaring, "The IDF is here to stay in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza to protect all of Israel. I have instructed the IDF to take all necessary steps to prepare for a long-term presence in the area." He reiterated that neither he nor Prime Minister Netanyahu intend to withdraw from the security zone. These statements prompted an immediate response from the Trump administration, which viewed them as a deviation from the agreed framework.

The US official reaffirmed Washington's full support for Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He explained that the framework agreement clearly outlines a phased redeployment of Israeli forces, contingent on Hezbollah's disarmament and destruction of its infrastructure, which must be verifiable. The Lebanese army is currently implementing initial pilot zones, and the US will continue to support the full implementation of this process. The US expects a gradual Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in line with the agreement.

This dispute adds to recent security tensions between Israel and the US. Katz is currently at the center of political and security controversies, with his statements provoking strong reactions domestically and internationally.
