Israeli Leaders Outline Vision to Revitalize Northern Galilee by 2026

The Galilee 2026 Conference was held in Safed on Tuesday under the theme "Restoring Security to the North," gathering senior government and security officials, local leaders, civil society representatives, and opinion makers to discuss the future of Israel's northern Galilee region. While security was the primary focus, much of the discussion centered on post-security challenges such as demographic growth, job creation, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and tourism to transform the Galilee into a desirable long-term living area.

Yachin Zik, CEO of the Galilee Development Authority, emphasized the demographic challenge, highlighting efforts to retain current residents and attract new populations to strengthen settlements. He framed this as a Zionist mission for 2026, calling on people to settle in the Galilee with community, quality of life, and employment opportunities. Yohanan Mali, CEO of the Ministry of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, pointed to infrastructure improvements and the planned establishment of a university in Kiryat Shmona as key long-term economic drivers.

Minister of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, Itzhak Vissar-Lav, presented an ambitious vision for an independent Galilee that provides local employment, healthcare, and quality of life without reliance on central Israel. He encouraged Israelis to visit the region through initiatives like the "Yalla Galil" festival to strengthen ties and promote tourism. Vissar-Lav also received the "Honored by the Northern Border Authorities" award for his wartime efforts.

Local business support was addressed by Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael (KKL) Chair Eyal Ostrinsky, who described measures to use KKL's purchasing power to aid northern businesses still recovering from recent conflicts. The conference also honored Raaya Strauss with the "Galilee Honor" award for her longstanding contributions to the region's economy and industry.

Overall, more than 1.8 billion shekels are expected to be invested in five-year development plans. The consensus was that restoring security is essential but insufficient alone; the Galilee's future success depends on building infrastructure, creating jobs, and attracting families to live and thrive in the region.
