Experts Debate Northern Israel's Security Future Ahead of 2026 Galilee Conference
Northern Israel is experiencing a relative calm that allows roads, businesses, and tourist sites to revive, but residents near the border remain uncertain whether this peace signals a new security reality or a temporary lull as Hezbollah regroups. Ahead of the 2026 Galilee Conference titled "Restoring Security to the North," four experts offer differing perspectives on the region's security and development challenges.
Retired Major General Yaakov Amidror analyzes the strategic balance, noting Hezbollah's weakened state due to disrupted land connections with Iran, but warns Israel must act swiftly to prevent rearmament. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Orna Mizrahi outlines three scenarios for Lebanon: gradual Israeli withdrawal with Lebanese army deployment, Hezbollah sabotage leading to prolonged conflict, or a deceptive calm allowing Hezbollah to rebuild influence.
Metula local council head David Azulai emphasizes the urgent need for long-term stability to encourage young families to return, highlighting that 60% have not come back due to security concerns. He stresses that military achievements alone cannot revive the north; economic development, education, and trust are essential.
