Palestinian Students Sue Columbia University Alleging Discrimination Amid Anti-Israel Protests

Three Palestinian students and staff members have filed a lawsuit against Columbia University, accusing the institution of discriminatory treatment since 2023. They claim the university failed to protect them from harassment and initiated biased disciplinary actions against them. The lawsuit highlights a specific incident from May 2025, when Columbia suspended 65 students involved in anti-Israel protests on campus.

In July 2025, the university escalated penalties against protest participants, including expulsions and degree cancellations. The affected students have refused to apologize or retract their actions, affirming their commitment to the Palestinian liberation cause. The campus has been a focal point for anti-Israel demonstrations, led by groups such as Columbia Apartheid Divest (CUAD), which organized a "walkout" protest encouraging students to wear black and conceal their identities.

Additionally, in March 2025, Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia researcher of Palestinian descent, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for leading anti-Israel protests. Despite holding permanent residency through marriage, the Trump administration sought his deportation. Columbia University’s campus activism has set a precedent for similar protests worldwide, intensifying tensions between pro-Palestinian students and university authorities.
