Rights Group Accuses Israeli Universities of Discriminating Against Arab Students

The Adalah organization, which advocates for the rights of the Arab minority in Israel, has accused Israeli universities of implementing discriminatory policies against Arab students following the October 7, 2023 attacks. A report titled "Apartheid in the Israeli Academic Sphere: Arab Students After October 7, 2023," published by The Jerusalem Post, claims that universities have established a two-tiered disciplinary system.

According to the report, this system allegedly imposes harsher penalties on Arab students, many of whom are Israeli citizens, for social media posts criticizing military actions or displaying certain symbols, compared to their Jewish counterparts who post similarly controversial content. The report analyzed disciplinary proceedings at approximately 40 academic institutions, noting that temporary suspensions were often issued before formal hearings. Adalah received 132 complaints and provided legal aid to about 100 students, with a significant number of those disciplined being young women.

University officials have strongly refuted these allegations. Representatives from the University of Haifa described the report as biased and misrepresenting the facts, asserting that all disciplinary actions were conducted strictly within existing regulations. They stated that students received qualified legal assistance and that some cases were resolved through independent mediation.
