Haredi Protesters Block Roads in Central Israel Over Yeshiva Student Arrest

After nearly a month of relative calm without arrests, the 'Hareidi Rezpenik' faction announced protests and road blockages in central Israel today, Wednesday, in response to the arrest of a yeshiva student. The demonstrations are planned to begin around 4 p.m. in the Bnei Brak area, with expected main locations including Highway 4 near Geha Junction and Jabotinsky Street. Security forces are also preparing for potential surprise blockages at other locations, as previous protests have caught police off guard.

The unrest was triggered by the arrest of a yeshiva student who had come to the Lahav 433 unit in Lod to provide testimony in a fraud case. According to Shas MK Moshe Abutbul, after giving his statement, the student was escorted outside by a police officer where military police were waiting in the parking lot to arrest him for desertion. Abutbul condemned the incident as a "serious red line crossing" and a breach of the police chief's commitment to the Haredi community. He called on National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to clarify procedures immediately to ensure Torah students can report crimes and testify without fear of arrest, warning that such actions could lead to the community withholding information from police, potentially endangering lives.

The coalition had previously passed a law intended to protect yeshiva students from arrests until elections, but the law was frozen by a Supreme Court interim order. The recent arrest has reignited tensions, and it remains uncertain whether the protests will disrupt traffic in central Israel or emerge unexpectedly elsewhere.
