Noam Betan Honors Fallen Soldier Yaron Shai in Emotional Concert Tribute

Israeli singer Noam Betan opened his concert week at the Barby club with a deeply moving tribute to Yaron Shai, the late son of former minister Yizhar Shai, who was killed in combat on October 7. During the performance, Betan sang "Opening Eyes," a song written by Yaron Shai during his military service. The lyrics, including the haunting line "I hope Saturday never comes," gained poignant significance after Yaron's death.

Yaron Shai, known as "Noni," served as a Nahal infantry soldier near the Gaza border. On the morning of the October 7 attack, he and his small team bravely fought off dozens of militants, delaying their advance and enabling reinforcements to organize and save many civilians. Yaron was critically wounded in the battle and later died at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Military investigations praised the soldiers' heroism and their role in preventing a greater disaster at Kerem Shalom.

The song was found on Yaron's personal phone, returned to his family by the IDF about six weeks after his death. His family set the lyrics to music, and the song has since been released on YouTube and Spotify, played at memorial events, and added to radio playlists.

At the concert, Betan addressed the audience with a unifying message, emphasizing Israel's diversity and resilience: "We are the only people who, when pushed to the wall, grow stronger." His remarks called for national unity despite challenges, highlighting the nation's vast potential.

Betan's tribute not only honored Yaron Shai's memory but also resonated deeply with the audience, including Yaron's family members present at the show. The concert marked the first of five sold-out performances scheduled for the week.
