Israeli Activists Cross Into Syria Near Mount Hermon and Are Returned by IDF

The IDF spokesperson announced on Tuesday morning that three Israeli civilians crossed the border into Syrian territory near Mount Hermon overnight. These individuals, members of the right-wing group "Pioneers of Bashan," were located by Israeli forces and returned to Israel. Upon their return, they were handed over to the police. The activists posted a video from Syria showing themselves setting up a barbecue beyond the border, but the IDF dismantled the setup and brought them back.

The group insists their actions are heroic, stating that arrests and opposition will not stop them, arguing that their efforts aim to prevent future Israeli soldiers from dying in the Bashan region. However, the IDF has warned that repeated border crossings by these activists divert military attention from armed enemies and complicate security operations.

The IDF has reported a sharp increase in incursions by right-wing activists into Syria, attempting to establish Jewish settlements in the area, which poses a significant security threat. Senior IDF officials describe the activists, mostly minors, as lawbreakers rather than pioneers, noting they use tools like electric discs to cut through the border fence and enter Syrian territory. While most are nonviolent when apprehended, some have shown aggression toward Israeli forces. The military continues to monitor and remove these activists to maintain security along the border.
