Israeli Activists Detained After Crossing Into Syria

Fourteen Israeli civilians identifying with the "Pioneers of the Golan" movement crossed the border into Syria on Tuesday evening near the Golan Heights, in an area under IDF control close to the village of Bir al-Ajam. The activists stated their intention was to re-establish a presence at a location they call "Neve HaBasan" and promote actual settlement there. They explained their action was a response to insufficient ideological and political support for their settlement goals, necessitating direct field action. The group also expressed expectations for law enforcement to act in accordance with democratic principles.

An IDF force from the Alon HaBasan area was dispatched, located the 14 Israelis, and returned them to Israeli territory. The individuals were detained and will be transferred to the Israel Police for further processing. The IDF strongly condemned the incident, labeling it a severe disruption to ongoing operational activities and a security risk to forces operating in the area.

The IDF spokesperson stated that the 14 Israeli civilians arrived in the Alon HaBasan area and crossed into Syrian territory. An IDF force responded, located them, and returned them to Israel. The detained civilians will be handed over to the Israel Police. The IDF "strongly condemns the incident, which constitutes another case of severe disruption to operational activity and a danger to the security of IDF forces operating in the area." The IDF added that law enforcement authorities are required to prosecute those involved to prevent them from repeatedly engaging in this activity, which constitutes a criminal offense.
