Colombia Recognizes Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights Following Foreign Minister Meeting

The Colombian government has officially recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, marking a historic diplomatic development. This decision followed a meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Colombia's newly inaugurated President, Abelardo de la Espriella, during Sa'ar's visit to Colombia last weekend. The announcement cited ongoing regional instability in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the Golan Heights for Israel's security as key reasons for the recognition.

Colombia emphasized the increased security threats Israel has faced in recent years, culminating in the October 7 terror attack, underscoring the necessity of Israel's control over the Golan. Foreign Minister Sa'ar expressed gratitude to President de la Espriella and Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bola Escobar for their cooperation, pledging to encourage other countries to follow Colombia and the United States in recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the area.

Beyond the recognition, the two countries agreed to fully restore diplomatic relations, including appointing ambassadors, relocating Colombia's embassy to Jerusalem, lifting visa requirements, and reinstating a free trade agreement. Colombia also committed to withdrawing from South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice and strengthening political, security, and economic ties with Israel.

Additionally, Sa'ar conveyed Israel's solidarity and offered assistance to Colombia following a recent severe earthquake. This diplomatic breakthrough is part of a broader initiative led by Sa'ar to deepen relations with Latin American countries, with 2026 designated as the "Year of Latin America" in Israel's Foreign Ministry.
