Villeurbanne Faces Roster Crisis Ahead of EuroLeague Opener Against Maccabi Tel Aviv

Villeurbanne, once poised to become Europe’s new super-team under Tony Parker’s leadership, is now struggling to assemble a full roster just six weeks before the 2026-27 EuroLeague season begins. Parker, who serves as both club president and head coach, had ambitious plans backed by new investors and a massive 59 million euro budget aimed at signing top players. However, these plans unraveled after the club failed to secure the necessary financial guarantees, leading to the departure of key players.

Notable exits include Daniel Theis moving to Maccabi Tel Aviv, Silvayn Francisco transferring to Panathinaikos, Armoni Brooks loaned to Valencia, and Nick Weiler-Babb heading to Crvena Zvezda Belgrade. Currently, Villeurbanne’s roster officially lists only four players: Boute Gatz, Bodian Massa, Ibon Pons, and Ambe Anjie, the latter entering his fourth season with the club. Additionally, center Joel Bolomboy is expected to join the squad despite not having signed or been officially presented yet, having agreed to terms and likely to remain despite the financial turmoil.
