Pregnant Woman Faces Emergency Placental Abruption During Routine Checkup in Israel

Michal, a 40-year-old woman in her 35th week of a high-risk fourth pregnancy, experienced a sudden and significant bleeding episode during a routine prenatal checkup at the Clalit Women’s Health Center in Kfar Saba, Israel. Initially feeling mild contractions and pressure, Michal was found to be three centimeters dilated when the bleeding rapidly intensified. Dr. Sivan Praldansky, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Meir Medical Center, suspected placental abruption, a serious condition where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall, risking oxygen and nutrient supply to the fetus.

The clinic immediately called an ambulance and alerted Meir Medical Center to prepare for Michal’s arrival. Upon hospital admission, the bleeding briefly subsided but then resumed, and Michal’s dilation increased to four centimeters. She was rushed to the operating room where a partial placental abruption was confirmed. Michal delivered the baby safely via emergency cesarean section, though the newborn required close monitoring due to the early gestational age.

Dr. Praldansky emphasized the urgency of the situation, explaining that placental abruption can cause severe maternal bleeding and fetal distress, necessitating rapid medical intervention.
