Israeli Tax Authorities Arrest Man for 25 Million Shekel Tax Fraud Scheme

Israeli tax investigators arrested Dudu Ohana, a resident of Rehovot, on suspicion of tax offenses totaling 25 million shekels and VAT violations amounting to 4 million shekels. Ohana allegedly operated shell companies to distribute and offset fictitious invoices. After evading investigation for an extended period, he was located and detained in a hotel suite in Hadera, far from his home in central Israel, where he continued managing the shell companies and their operatives.

The investigation revealed that Ohana used his son in an attempt to obstruct the inquiry. Weeks earlier, tax authorities searched Ohana's home and discovered that his son had burned documents and company seals on a barbecue grill and destroyed additional evidence using a garden hose. The son, in his early 20s, was arrested and later released under restrictive conditions. A police officer working nearby reported finding burnt and wet checks, seals, and documents discarded at a construction site, which were handed over to investigators.

Ohana was not present during the home search. Authorities tracked him using advanced technology and arrested him during a coordinated operation involving the Beersheba Customs and VAT Investigation Unit, the tax authority’s intelligence unit, and Hadera police. The hotel room search uncovered computers, mobile phones, lawyers’ seals allegedly used for forging documents, and other evidence. His detention was extended by a Beersheba Magistrate’s Court for one week. Ohana remains a suspect and has not been convicted, with the presumption of innocence applying.

This case highlights ongoing efforts by Israeli authorities to combat large-scale tax fraud and the use of shell companies to evade taxes.
