Pentagon Orders Dramatic Acceleration of U.S. Weapons Production Amid Iran Conflict

The U.S. Department of Defense has issued a directive demanding a significant acceleration in the production and supply of critical weapons and ammunition, which are in severe shortage due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg instructed defense industry leaders on July 8, 2026, to submit plans within 21 days outlining how they will speed up delivery schedules and expand manufacturing capacity. Feinberg emphasized that multi-year development cycles are unacceptable and called for "fast and aggressively accelerated" timelines.

This move follows rising tensions between President Donald Trump and the Pentagon over depleted military stockpiles, which have limited the White House's ability to escalate military operations. The conflict has seen extensive use of Tomahawk cruise missiles, Patriot and THAAD interceptors, and tactical ballistic missiles, rapidly draining U.S. inventories. For example, the global Patriot missile stock dropped from 2,200 to fewer than 827 units, and THAAD interceptors fell from 452 to under 278, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Pentagon has already taken steps to address the shortage, including recent framework agreements with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin to boost production of PAC-3 Patriot and THAAD missiles, and a $58.6 billion contract to triple PAC-3 output by 2030. Additional contracts with defense technology firms aim to expand missile strike capabilities and procure cost-effective munitions. However, these efforts hinge on Congressional approval of a $1.15 trillion defense budget, which remains stalled amid Democratic opposition to increased spending.

Feinberg's memorandum also identified several critical weapons programs for potential acceleration, including the Next Generation Interceptor missile, the advanced NASAMS air defense system, mobile radar units, pilot training systems, and space-based missile tracking. Defense companies were urged to propose capital investments and facility expansions to meet high-volume, long-term orders and demonstrate willingness to share risks. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the memo's authenticity and said it aligns with ongoing efforts to rebuild the U.S. defense industrial base.

The depletion of U.S. munitions has heightened risks for American forces and constrained strategic options in the Iran conflict, prompting urgent action to restore military readiness and sustain operational capabilities.
