Iran Receives Hundreds of Russian and Chinese MANPADS Amid Recent Calm

Iran has reportedly received hundreds of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles from Russia and China during the recent period of relative calm, according to Kurdish and Arab opposition sources in the Ahvaz region. The shipments included approximately 300 9K333 Verba missiles, delivered in five small containers via the Caspian Sea and distributed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These missiles were deployed near bases and sensitive sites in Tehran, Kermanshah, Isfahan, border bases near Iraqi Kurdistan, and along the Strait of Hormuz coastline.

In addition to deploying Chinese and Russian air defense systems near border areas, further MANPADS were transferred in the past two weeks to pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. About a week ago, Reuters reported that Iran is expected to receive an initial shipment of up to 400 shoulder-fired launchers from China within weeks, in a deal valued between $60 million and $70 million.

Separately, China has reportedly contacted Houthi rebels to ensure safe passage for Chinese oil tankers through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, although the Chinese Foreign Ministry has neither confirmed these talks nor denied them, emphasizing the importance of maritime security. Since the Houthis imposed restrictions on shipping through Bab al-Mandab, China has made several direct appeals to allow Saudi oil tankers bound for China to pass safely. Iran is also aware of these maritime security arrangements.
