Hundreds of Yeshiva Students Gather at 'Birkat Mordechai' Camp Amid Torah World Challenges
During the Bein Hazmanim period, hundreds of top yeshiva students and high school yeshiva pupils from across Israel convened at the "Birkat Mordechai" camp organized by the Bnei Torah movement. The camp, founded 65 years ago by Rabbi Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi with encouragement from his father-in-law Rabbi Meir Hadash, has become a central institution for yeshiva students seeking clear Torah knowledge and worldview. Over the decades, prominent Torah leaders such as Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman and Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik supported and personally visited the camp, strengthening its role in deepening Torah commitment.
This year, amid significant challenges facing the Torah world, the camp took on heightened importance, attracting unprecedented demand from leading yeshiva students. Hundreds of high school yeshiva students also participated, each paired with a yeshiva student mentor. The program included open forums discussing the meaning of Torah life, the status of yeshiva students, generational challenges, and building a strong worldview. The topic of military conscription was a central and emotional focus, with candid discussions addressing attitudes toward the army, the state, and the balance of Torah and work.
The atmosphere was vibrant and spiritually intense, complemented by enriching activities such as competitions and trips. The camp’s late-night "mishmar" sessions featured deep Talmudic study following Rabbi Ezrachi’s method, emphasizing Torah’s sweetness as both a spiritual reward and worldly enjoyment. A halacha knowledge contest on blessings was also held. Leading rabbis, including Rabbi Ben Zion Ezrachi, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Rabbi David Cohen, Rabbi Shraga Steinman, Rabbi Yehuda Amital, and Rabbi David Lau, visited to inspire the participants, emphasizing the great merit and responsibility of Torah students today.
A highlight was the screening of a passionate recording of Rabbi Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi’s father calling for total dedication to Torah, reinforcing the camp’s message against the backdrop of contemporary challenges. The camp’s response to current pressures was to strengthen bonds, clarify Torah perspectives, and renew a sense of mission to place Torah at the center of life. This experience left a lasting impression on participants, many of whom had previously viewed Torah as just one value among others, now embracing it as the essence of life.
