Former Minister Issawi Freij Runs for Israeli Football Association Presidency

Issawi Freij, a former Israeli minister and ex-chairman of the Kafr Qasim sports club, announced on Thursday his candidacy for the presidency of the Israeli Football Association. He will lead a new independent faction in the upcoming elections for the association's leadership. Alongside him is Liad Ilani, former deputy and acting mayor of Ramat Gan and current city council member, who will run as the second on the list.

The faction aims to bring significant changes to Israeli football management by promoting professionalism, transparency, and success, with a strong focus on youth development and investment in peripheral regions. Freij emphasized football's potential to unite diverse populations across Israel, bridging gaps between sectors and geographic areas.

Freij intends to replace the current association chairman, Shino Zohar, highlighting the need for change to help Israeli football reach international milestones such as the World Cup and European Championships. Ilani brings experience from his previous roles in sports and education in Ramat Gan, where he advanced sports infrastructure and supported local clubs.

The election marks a critical moment for Israeli football as the new faction seeks to revitalize the sport and improve its competitive standing internationally.
