Study Reveals True Ecological Impact of 2021 Oil Spill on Israel's Mediterranean Coast
In February 2021, approximately 190 kilometers of Israel's Mediterranean coastline were contaminated by oil and tar from a spill originating outside its territorial waters. Although considered one of the region's most severe marine pollution events, the full ecological risk to marine species had not been comprehensively assessed until now. A new study published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, led by the University of Haifa, found that in the most heavily polluted areas, up to 75.4% of key species in the upper water layers were exposed to toxic petroleum compounds linked to harmful and potentially lethal effects.
The research team combined a novel sensitivity model for marine species to toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in crude oil with a simulation of the oil spill's spread over 18 days, based on environmental data such as currents, winds, temperature, and salinity. This approach allowed them to estimate ecological risks even for species lacking direct toxicity data by using information from biologically related species and considering life stages and food web positions.
The model successfully predicted exposure levels for about 88% of the 46 species analyzed. It indicated potential harm to 28 of 31 fish species, 10 of 11 planktonic crustaceans, and all five snail species in the most contaminated zones. The study also showed that species impact decreased with distance from the spill's core. Researchers emphasized that these are risk assessments based on modeling rather than direct mortality measurements.
Dr. Yigal Bernstein from the University of Haifa highlighted that relying solely on visible oil-covered or dead animals underestimates the spill's impact, as smaller species and early life stages may suffer unseen damage. The model offers authorities a tool to identify where ecological harm is greatest and prioritize monitoring and response efforts in future spills. The study involved collaboration with the Leon Charney School of Marine Sciences, the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute, the Israel Meteorological Service, the University of Miami, and Tel Aviv University.
This research sheds new light on the extensive and previously underestimated ecological consequences of the 2021 oil spill along Israel's coast and provides a framework for improved environmental risk management in marine pollution incidents.
