Israel Advances Complex Restoration of Evrona Nature Reserve After 2014 Oil Spill
In December 2014, a pipeline operated by the Eilat-Ashkelon Oil Pipeline Company (now Europe Asia Pipeline Company) ruptured, releasing approximately 5,000 cubic meters of crude oil into the heart of the Evrona Nature Reserve in southern Arava, Israel. The spill contaminated about 144 dunams of the reserve, flowing along stream channels for roughly seven kilometers and causing one of the most severe environmental disasters in Israeli history. The incident led to a prolonged legal process, resulting in over 100 million shekels in compensation paid by the company, with around 20 million shekels allocated directly to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority for reserve rehabilitation.
Twelve years later, the reserve is undergoing one of Israel's most complex oil spill restoration projects in a harsh desert environment. Dr. Nitzan Segev, an ecologist specializing in the Arava, described the project as unprecedented due to the extreme desert conditions and the nature of the contamination. The oil created a toxic, impermeable layer on the soil surface, preventing water infiltration and severely damaging rare and adapted plant species, including key acacia trees that support a rich ecosystem with insects and approximately 200 Negev tortoises.
Initial emergency responses included oil extraction and removal of poisoned acacia fruits to protect wildlife. A pilot bioremediation effort using oil-degrading bacteria showed over 70% pollution reduction on a small scale but was less effective when expanded. Consequently, the Nature and Parks Authority shifted to active remediation by physically removing about 30,000 tons of contaminated soil from depths of 20 to 40 centimeters. This work is conducted carefully to avoid damaging the acacia roots, with clean soil layers temporarily removed and later replaced.
The restoration includes hydrogeomorphological research to preserve natural stream courses and bank slopes. So far, about 10 dunams have been cleaned, with several months of work remaining. The project avoids importing external soil, relying instead on natural processes to restore the ecosystem. Officials hope that upcoming winter floods will help reestablish natural water flow, aiding vegetation recovery and gradually replenishing eroded soil. The Nature and Parks Authority expressed optimism that the reserve will eventually regain its ecological vitality.
