Likud Primaries Set for August 17 Amid Internal Disputes Over Candidate Slots

Ahead of the Likud party primaries scheduled for August 17, party central committee member Moti Ohana addressed internal conflicts regarding reserved slots and the party list composition. Ohana predicted significant changes to the list and warned that those opposing the inclusion of new candidates could face consequences at the polls. The primaries come amid tensions over reserved seats and a Likud court ruling barring incumbent Knesset members from running in certain districts.

Ohana emphasized that party members want to preserve Likud's democratic character by introducing fresh faces. He specifically stated that Knesset member David Bitan, who opposed new candidates, "will pay a heavy price in the primaries." Regarding the reserved slot given to former minister Haim Katz, Ohana said this is a democratic compromise, noting Katz should have competed like everyone else.

Ohana expects the Likud list to undergo a makeover but believes Knesset members Moshe Saada and Ariel Kallner will secure spots through the national list without reserved slots. He also predicted a strong showing for Knesset member Tali Gottlieb, saying she will be placed near the top as supporters remove other names to promote her.

On the possibility of Yair Netanyahu receiving a reserved slot or running in the primaries, Ohana expressed skepticism about a guaranteed spot but acknowledged Netanyahu's potential to earn a place through elections. He cited the example of Gilad Sharon, who ran in primaries and sought support personally, underscoring that Likud voters are independent in their choices.

In contrast, Knesset member Shason Guetta said in a news interview that if Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to reserve a slot for his son, he would not oppose it but was unaware of any such plan.
