US-Iran Negotiations Continue Amid Uncertainty Over Hormuz Strait Control Agreement

Negotiations between Oman and Iran are ongoing, alongside secret and unofficial message exchanges between the United States and Iran. A senior source familiar with the talks told CNN there is about a 50-50 chance that the US and Iran will reach an agreement by Friday. This contrasts with US President Donald Trump's statements suggesting a deal is imminent. The Iranian delegation does not include representatives from the Revolutionary Guards, who must approve the final details of any temporary agreement for it to take effect, casting doubt on the deal's implementation.

President Trump described the US-Iran discussions as "very good" and warned of severe consequences if Iran withdraws from the agreement again. He also indicated that a deal concerning control over the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as soon as today. Iran, however, denies any direct communication with the US, stating that talks are only with Oman.

If approved, the agreement would effectively grant Iran near-total control over the Strait of Hormuz, requiring all ships to coordinate passage with the Revolutionary Guards, at least upon entering the strait. This development raises significant strategic concerns given the strait's importance for global oil shipments and regional security.
