Progressive Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Democratic Senate Primary Against Pro-Israel Haley Stevens

In Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim and outspoken critic of Israel, is on track to defeat moderate, pro-Israel Haley Stevens. With 92.9% of votes counted, El-Sayed leads narrowly with 48.7% against Stevens' 47.3%, but NBC has already called the race for him based on remaining vote projections. The primary is viewed as a significant indicator of the Democratic Party's future direction ahead of the November midterm elections.

El-Sayed's campaign, with only $2.1 million raised, faced Stevens' heavily funded $62.2 million campaign, which included $32 million from pro-Israel group AIPAC. Stevens was supported by moderate Democrats and pro-Israel organizations, seen as having a better chance to defeat Republican Mike Rogers in November. El-Sayed, however, has gained momentum in Michigan, a swing state Trump won in 2020, and is expected to face Rogers in the general election.

The race highlighted deep divisions within the Democratic Party between progressives and moderates, especially over Israel policy. El-Sayed has accused Israel of apartheid and genocide and opposes U.S. aid to Israel, while Stevens supports a two-state solution and military aid but criticized Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. El-Sayed's campaign also faced controversy when a former staffer was charged with threatening Jewish leaders.

El-Sayed, a former public health official and epidemiologist, has been dubbed "Michigan's Obama" for his charisma and progressive platform, including public healthcare. He framed himself as a threat to corporate interests and AIPAC, contrasting with Stevens' establishment backing. Both candidates emphasized defeating Rogers in November, with El-Sayed calling for unity to "deliver a blow to Trumpism."

Other Democratic primaries in Michigan saw progressive candidates winning key House races, while in Missouri, pro-Israel incumbent Wesley Bell defeated progressive anti-Israel challenger Cori Bush, maintaining a moderate hold there.
