Anti-Israel Progressive Abdul El-Sayed Leads Michigan Democratic Senate Primary
Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate known for his anti-Israel stance, is poised to win the Democratic primary for one of Michigan's two U.S. Senate seats. With 92% of the votes counted, El-Sayed holds a narrow lead that NBC projects will be insurmountable for his opponent. El-Sayed, a Muslim epidemiologist and son of Egyptian immigrants, ran against Hailey Stevens, a moderate, pro-Israel Democrat and current member of the House of Representatives who enjoyed strong establishment support. The pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC invested $32 million to help Stevens defeat El-Sayed. In the November general election, El-Sayed will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers.
