Haifa Protester Faces Five Days House Arrest Over Anti-Netanyahu Sign

A 49-year-old resident of Haifa was placed under five days of house arrest and banned for 15 days from Haifa's Horev Square after protesting against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The man, who has no prior criminal record, had been demonstrating for about two weeks at the Horev junction, holding a sign depicting Netanyahu with the caption "Hamas Financier" alongside images of the Hamas flag and a rifle. The police detained him on suspicion of public order offenses due to the sign, which included a depiction of a weapon associated with the terrorist group Hamas.

Following the police decision, the protester appealed through the detainee support unit, and his lawyer, Tomer Ben-Hamo, filed an appeal against the police's ruling. The Haifa Magistrate's Court is scheduled to hear the appeal. The detainee support unit criticized the police action as an infringement on freedom of expression, arguing that the authorities should investigate those who allegedly transferred cash to Hamas rather than those publicly expressing dissent.

The Israeli police stated that while they respect the right to protest and freedom of expression as fundamental democratic rights, they will act against any suspected offenses or public order violations that could threaten public peace and security. The protester's sign, which included the Hamas flag and a long gun illustration, raised concerns leading to his detention and subsequent investigation at the police station before his release under conditions.
