Israeli Police Report Drop in Arab Sector Homicides but Warn Against Complacency
The number of homicides in Israel's Arab sector has dropped significantly, from 26 victims by July 2025 to 11 by July 2026. Despite this encouraging decline, Israeli police caution that the trend may be temporary and warn that a single conflict could quickly reverse the progress. A police source told Maariv that the situation remains fragile and emphasized the need for continuous operational plans to combat violence in the Arab community.
The police attribute the reduction partly to ongoing covert investigations by the Lahav and central units, involving informants, undercover agents, and advanced technology aimed at dismantling criminal organizations. Many top crime leaders have been arrested and imprisoned in recent months. Nationwide operations such as "Wall and Man" and "Iron Net" have also contributed to a significant decrease in violent incidents.
Additionally, a new unit under the Investigations and Intelligence Division monitors criminal activity in real time to prevent crimes. The intelligence division has recently implemented the "Global Shield" directive, which blocks senior crime figures from entering certain countries and coordinates with foreign police forces to enforce restrictions.
Police are also targeting the economic foundations of these organizations through enforcement actions in affected communities, using new technologies to enhance efforts. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) is expected to join the fight against crime in the Arab sector within the next two weeks, focusing on illegal arms trafficking and related offenses, which fall under national security and counterterrorism laws.
A recent undercover operation led to the indictment of dozens of arms dealers in the Arab community, a development police say will reduce severe violent incidents and illegal weapon use. Authorities stress that these uncompromising measures are essential to sustaining the current progress and addressing what they describe as a national problem.
