Israeli Police Launch Multiple Crackdowns as Car Bombings and Crime Surge in Arab Communities
A car explosion on Tuesday in the Kiryat Haim neighborhood of Haifa marked the third major blast this week linked to organized crime in Israel. Since the beginning of the month, eight people have been killed in car bombings, a tactic increasingly used by criminals. Tuesday's blast killed the criminal Rabee Abu Heikal, associated with the Hariri crime organization, in broad daylight on a busy street. Eyewitnesses described the explosion as devastating, with one resident saying it felt like a missile had landed nearby.
Despite repeated police operations and public promises, crime rates, especially violent crime in Arab communities, continue to rise. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has focused on visits to Arab towns and confrontational social media posts, but has not addressed the violence directly or appeared at crime scenes to support police efforts. Police Commissioner Danni Levi, who took office in August 2024, vowed in November 2024 not to seek a fourth year in office without significant crime reduction achievements in Arab society. However, crime has surged under his leadership.
Levi has launched several high-profile police operations over the past two years, including "Emergency Stop" in September 2024, "Iron Net" in May 2026, and others targeting criminal economic networks and violent offenders. These operations involved thousands of officers, seizures of hundreds of weapons, and arrests, but have failed to curb the violence or reduce murder rates. For example, a February 2025 operation in Ramla and Lod aimed to cut off financial support to crime families but was followed by continued shootings and murders.
In November 2025, Levi initiated "New Order," a large-scale emergency operation in the Negev to break the cycle of violence, but he was reportedly abroad during its launch, leaving National Security Minister Ben-Gvir to lead on the ground. The police have repeatedly announced coordinated efforts with government agencies and the prosecution, yet the wave of violence persists. Since the "Iron Net" operation began on May 31, 2026, 34 people have been killed in Arab communities, underscoring the ongoing challenge.
The continuing escalation of violent crime and the limited impact of police operations highlight the difficulties Israeli authorities face in combating organized crime within Arab society. Commissioner Levi's repeated promises to dismantle criminal networks have yet to translate into tangible improvements on the streets.
