Iran Uses Strait of Hormuz Control to Pressure US Amid Economic Crisis

Iran is leveraging its control over the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic pressure tool against the United States, aiming to deter further military action by Washington and Israel. Tehran hopes that rising oil prices, driven by disruptions in the vital shipping route, will force President Donald Trump to reconsider any additional strikes, especially with the 2026 midterm elections approaching. The Iranian leadership believes that high fuel costs and inflation in the US could compel Trump to accept their terms to avoid political fallout.

However, this tactic risks deepening Iran's international isolation and worsening its already fragile economy. Internal divisions are growing within the Iranian government, with the Revolutionary Guards viewing control of the strait as essential leverage following severe setbacks to Iran's nuclear program and proxy forces after a US-Israeli surprise attack in February. Meanwhile, more moderate factions warn that the American blockade is pushing Iran's economy toward collapse.

Economic indicators underscore the crisis: the International Monetary Fund projects a 6% contraction in Iran's economy for 2026, while annual inflation has surged to approximately 69%. Although the Iranian chokehold on the strait has drastically reduced oil flow from the Persian Gulf to about 36% of pre-conflict levels, global oil prices have surprisingly remained below the critical $100 per barrel threshold that might significantly harm the US economy. Efforts by Houthi rebels to disrupt Red Sea shipping have not pushed crude prices above $80 per barrel as of early August.

In response, Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are investing heavily in alternative routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, potentially diminishing Iran's influence on global oil markets over time. Yet, these alternatives remain vulnerable to Iranian missile and drone attacks, maintaining the threat level. Gulf countries view Iran's control over the strait as a dire threat to regional stability, fearing Tehran's ability to dictate which oil tankers can pass on any given day.
