Over 650 Hesder Yeshiva Students Enlist in One of Largest IDF Drafts in Years
More than 650 Hesder Yeshiva students reported for military service at the Tel Hashomer base in one of the largest enlistment cycles seen in recent years. Eliezer (Lazo) Deutsch of the Hesder Yeshiva Union highlighted a clear trend of increasing numbers of young men choosing the combined path of Torah study and combat service, with growing demand from various IDF units to integrate them.
Historically, most Hesder enlistments occurred in March, but this year both the March and August cycles recorded especially high numbers. Deutsch explained that after two years of Torah study, these students arrive at the recruitment center well-prepared and motivated, bringing a strong spirit from their yeshiva environment that benefits their military units. He noted that even more students requested to join armored corps units than the union had anticipated.
Despite ongoing public debates about the relationship between the yeshiva world and the military, Deutsch emphasized that cooperation with the IDF remains strong and smooth. Hesder students enlist together but are then distributed across various battalions and companies, including armor and engineering units, fully integrating with the broader Israeli military.
The connection between the yeshivas and their students continues throughout their service, with rabbis visiting bases, providing ongoing support, and organizing special study days within units. Deutsch described the enlistment day as a significant and emotional event, with extensive preparation behind the scenes. He also noted that the recruitment cycle continues with additional groups joining the IDF in the coming days, including over 200 soldiers enlisting in the Kfir Brigade alone on the following Sunday.
